Bait and Spinning

Bait fishing and spinning for trout is a popular pastime for visitor and locals alike. Bait, fishing gear and fishing licences can be purchased in Bright. A recreational fishing license is required for persons aged 18-70

Take care if wading as the current can be strong. Also holes in riverbeds change in depth and location from season to season. If using worms drift your worm down at the top of a pool using a small sinker. You can do this any time of the day.

Where are the best spots? A very good question, maybe the pondage at Mt. Beauty, Lake Buffalo, Kiewa River, Ovens River and Buckland River. Finding the right spot is half the challenge.

Fly Fishing

The local Ovens and Buckland Rivers and their tributaries provide good fly fishing with the best times being from October to December.

Wet fly fishing is very productive especially at the top of pools where the water is running in. Keep in touch with the fly at all times, making constant line connections. Some useful patterns are Royal Coachman, Royal Wulf and Duns. A white moth is good when hatches are on and trout are taking them from the surface. Best fishing is at sunset.

BBQ it there or bring it home for tea. The Trout Farm is signed well and on the left before you reach the town of Harrietville. It is free to enter but costs $13 per kilogram for caught trout and $17 per kilogram for caught salmon.

Boating and Skiing

For those that want to troll for fish from their “tinny” a trip to Lake Buffalo, Rocky Valley Dam or Mt Beauty pondage is always worth a try.  If water skiing is your sport Lake Buffalo has facilities for this.
